Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG)
ESG (Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty) is a non-surgical, endoscopic weight loss procedure that "tightens" or reshapes the stomach into a smaller, tube-like shape—similar in outcome to a surgical sleeve gastrectomy, but without removing any part of the stomach.
What “Stomach Tightening” Means in ESG:
- During ESG, the endoscopist places a series of sutures inside the stomach using a scope inserted through the mouth.
- These sutures fold and tighten the stomach, reducing its volume by up to 70–80%.
- This smaller stomach:
- Holds less food
- Slows gastric emptying
- Helps you feel full sooner and for longer
No incisions, stapling, or stomach removal is involved.
ESG Overview:
- Performed under general anesthesia or deep sedation
- Takes about 60–90 minutes
- Outpatient
- Recovery: most people resume normal activities in a few days
Benefits:
- Minimally invasive
- Lower risk than surgery
- Shorter recovery time
- Can result in 15–20% total body weight loss in a year
- Reversible (in some cases)
Ideal Candidates:
- BMI of 30 to 40, or higher if not eligible for surgery
- Willing to commit to lifestyle and diet changes
- Patients who have had a prior sleeve gastrectomy
