Hemorrhoid Banding
What is Hemorrhoid Banding?
Hemorrhoid banding is a non-surgical procedure used to treat internal hemorrhoids. It involves placing a small rubber band around the base of the hemorrhoid. This cuts off the blood supply to the hemorrhoid, causing it to shrink and fall off within a few days.
Procedure
- Preparation: The CRH banding technique utilized at Digestive Disease Associates is an office-based procedure that does not require bowel preparation.
- During the Procedure:
- You will be positioned comfortably, usually lying on your left side.
- The doctor will insert a special tool called an anoscope to visualize the hemorrhoid.
- A tiny rubber band is placed around the hemorrhoid.
- This process may be repeated for multiple hemorrhoids if necessary.
- After the Procedure:
- You may experience mild discomfort or a feeling of fullness in the rectum.
- Most people can resume normal activities immediately after the procedure.
- Should avoid heavy straining or strenuous activity for the day. Otherwise, you can resume normal activities on the day of your procedure.
Effectiveness and Risks
- Effectiveness: Hemorrhoid banding is effective in treating internal hemorrhoids, with a success rate of approximately 80%.
- Risks: Potential risks include pain/discomfort, bleeding, and infection.
When is it Recommended?
Hemorrhoid banding is typically recommended for internal hemorrhoids that cause frequent symptoms such as bleeding, itching, or pain.
